SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –The Southern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team beat Concordia College in straight sets, 3-0, on the final day of the AIC Labor Day Tournament held in Springfield, Mass.
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) led all student athletes with 11 kills and five digs.
Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) contributed five kills and nine digs, while four Owls:
Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio),
Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.),
Syriah Celestine (Greenlawn, N.Y.), and
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) each had three kills.
Vanessa Sullivan (Paramus, N.J.) added 10 digs and two service aces and
Kimberly Lachowicz ran the offense with 27 assists and seven digs.
The Owls cruised through the competition in the first set by a score of 25-13. Concordia tested the Owls in the second set at 23-19. Southern gave up four points almost allowing the Clippers a chance, but a kill from
Natasha Carlbert (Southington, Conn.) all but sealed the second set at 25-23. The third set began as a back and forth struggle with both teams tied up at 9-all before the Owls rattled off five quick points and never looked back to take the final set and match at 25-18.
With the win today, the Owls are now 3-1 on the season.
The Owls will be back in action later this week for a home match on Sept. 5th against Felician College scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
