NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team came away Saturday with a tie, 2-2 against Saint Michael's College.
Saint Michael's struck first in the 11th minute when Josh Vlasich received a pass in the box and put it in the back of the net. The Owls would answer when senior
Luke Perry (Macclesfield, England) took a chance from 20 yards out. The chance paid off, as he sent it into the top right corner to tie the game at one in the 32
nd minute. Ten minutes later teammate
Mario DiMiceli (Vilers-Le-Bouillet, Belgium) would get a long pass from
Tyler Naef (Habrouck Heights, N.J.) and strike it past Saint Michael's goalkeeper to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
The Purple Knights had a quick response when in the 43
rd minute Gonzalo Mengotti would head a cross past goalkeeper
Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, Conn.) to even the score at two apiece. The game would be tied at the end of regulation and head to overtime.
As time ran down at the end of the first overtime DiMiceli received a cross into the box and headed it past the goalkeeper only to have the referee whistle offside's. The game would end in a 2-2 tie.
The match saw a total of thirty two fouls called, twenty two of them against Saint Michael's. The Owls had twenty three shots on goal and goalkeeper
Greg Cumpstone also had five saves in the tie.
Southern is now 4-0-1 on the season and will be back in action this Tuesday when they travel to LeMoyne College at 4 p.m.
