PHILADELPHIA, P.A. –The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team tied a program best 13-match win streak today, that dated back to the 2009 season, with a 3-1 victory over Caldwell College. The streak was later snapped by host school University of the Sciences Philadelphia in the second part of a tri-match ending in a 3-1 score.
In the match against Caldwell,
Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had one of her most impressive performances to date. She tallied 22 kills off a 0.327-hitting percentage and followed that up with 28 digs and two block assists as she notched her eighth double-double of the season.
Kimberly Lachowicz dished out 49 assists with 10 digs and two block assists to improve her double-double total to six on the year.
Syriah Celestine recorded her second match with at least four block assists and contributed 10 kills and two solo blocks.
Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio),
Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) and
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) each had eight kills, while Black added 11 digs. Lathrop had a season-high four block assists and Beres managed three block assist with a solo block.
Vanessa Sullivan (Paramus, N.J.) recorded a season-high 30 digs to her credit.
The Owls dropped the first set in extra time by the score of 27-25, but quickly rebounded to extend their win streak to 13 straight wins this season. The final three sets ended at 25-15, 25-20, and 25-14.
In the second match on the day for the Owls, Southern played part in a knocked-down and dragged-out slugfest against host school University of the Sciences Philadelphia. Two of the four set finished within three points, while the other two needed extra play and finished within the required two points to win. The Owls fell by a score of 25-22, 27-29, 22-25, and 24-26.
McVey came through with another stellar performance with her ninth double-double on the season through the teams 16 matches to date. She had 18 kills and 18 digs to her credit. Lachowicz commanded her seventh double-double of the season and another 50+ assist match with 50 assists and 10 digs with two kills. Black stepped up huge for the Owls on the defensive end with her season-high 27 digs with 13 kills and two block assists. Beres had 15 kills with two block assists, while Lathrop had six kills and three block assists. Sullivan added another 26 digs to her season total with a service ace.
The Owls are now 14-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday Sept. 25th as they return home to square off against Assumption scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
