NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Mario DiMiceli (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored three times as the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team opened its season with an impressive 4-0 victory over the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Jess Dow Field.

Mario Costa (Pawcatuck, Conn.) also scored for the Owls. Goalie Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, Conn.) did not have to make a save in recording a shutout.

The game was scoreless until Saint Rose turned the ball over in their own box and DiMiceli put it in the back of the net in the 24th minute. Twelve minutes later, Ross McGibney (Dublin, Ireland) bent a free kick into the box where Costa headed it past the goal keeper for the Owls second goal and they would go into the half up 2-0.

The second half was back and forth between the teams until DiMiceli was at it again. Eighty-two minutes into the game, the midfielder bent a free kick into the right corner giving Southern a commanding 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, DiMiceli took advantage of another Saint Rose turnover and placed his third and the teams' final goal in the back of
net as the Owls took care of business, beating the Golden Knights 4-0.

The Owls will be back in action Tuesday Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. as they welcome Dowling College to Jess Dow Field.
