Women's Soccer Opens Northeast-10 Conference Play This Weekend

The Owls play Merrimack this weekend.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team will play its first Northeast-10 Conference game of the season when it travels to Merrimack on Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Junior Suzane Pires had the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as the Owls defeated Mercy, 2-1, in their home opener at Jess Dow Field.

A WIN IN THE OPENER
Sophomore Bryana Poulin had the eventual winning goal in the 59th minute to lead the Owls to a 1-0 win at Philadelphia to open the 2012 season.

GETTING ON THE BOARD
Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Nickerson picked up her first collegiate win in her first start in a 1-0 win at Philadelphia.

ALL-TIME VERSUS MERRIMACK
SCSU is 6-7-1 all-time against Merrimack, including a 0-0 tie last year.

REGIONAL RANKINGS
The Owls are now No. 6 in the NSCAA regional rankings.

THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Kylie Rogers and Lisamarie Tarchini and junior Sarah Brochu will serve as team captains for the Owls this year.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
The Owls welcome 11 newcomers - Bobbi Bergstrom, Janie Jannito, Emily Lombardi, Jillian Newton, Elizabeth Nickerson, Kayla Orozco, Becca Scalise, Jessica Spezzano, Allison Vachon, Suzanne Heston and Ashley Russo - to the the squad.

IN THE NE-10 PRESEASON POLL
SCSU was selected fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll, as voted by the league's coaches.

LOOKING BACK AT 2011
The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team finished the year with an overall record of 10-5-3. The Owls were ranked as high as No. 25 in the nation in 2011 and made an appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. In addition, Jacquelyn Fede was selected as both the NE-10 and ECAC Goalkeeper of the Year.

OWLS RANK AMONG NATION'S ELITE
The Owls cracked the NSCAA Division II Top 25 poll during the 2011 season, ranking as high as No. 25.

SHUTOUT PROMINANCE
SCSU ranked No. 2 nationally in Div. II with a .722 shutout percentage in 2011.

FOUR OWLS EARN ALL-REGION HONORS
Jacquelyn Fede, Sarah Brochu, Jenna Mallico and Suzane Pires were all tabbed for All-Region accolades for their play during the 2011 season.

SIX EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Jacquelyn Fede, Sarah Brochu, Jenna Mallico, Suzane Pires, Lisamarie Tarchini and Hannah Spreckley were all recognized by the Northeast-10 Conference for their play during the 2011 season. Fede, Brochu, Mallico, Pires and Tarchini earned All-Conference honors, while Spreckley was named to the All-Rookie Team.

FOUR NAMED ALL-NEW ENGLAND
Jacquelyn Fede, Sarah Brochu, Jenna Mallico and Suzane Pires were all selected All-New England for their play during the 2011 season.

OWLS TIE PROGRAM RECORD
The Owls opened up the 2011 season by recording seven consecutive shutouts, tying a program record set back in 2000.

OWLS THRIVE INDIVIDUALLY IN THE CLASSROOM
From the academic standpoint, the Owls were honored with the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the third year in a row. Jacquelyn Fede was named an Academic All-American, while Fede and Sarah Brochu both earned NE-10 Women's Soccer All-Academic Team honors. Nineteen student-athletes were also named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

DUO NAMED TO NEWISA SENIOR BOWL
Jacquelyn Fede and Jenna Mallico were both selected to play in the NEWISA Senior Bowl following the conclusion of the 2011 season.

ON DECK
The Owls will then  travel to Adelphi on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
