NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fought back late and had a chance to tie the game, but were defeated by Saint Anselm, 83-80, in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.
Saint Anselm (13-2, 9-2 NE-10) had three players in double-digits. Roy Mabrey led with 22 points. Mike McCahey also had 20 points and nine rebounds while Chris Santo had 15 points and five rebounds.
SCSU (10-6, 7-5 NE-10) had four players in double-digits.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led with 21 points and six rebounds.
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) and
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) each tallied 15 points.
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) also had 13 points and eight rebounds.
In the first half, the Owls tied the game at 25 with a three-pointer by Murphy with 5:44 remaining in the half, assisted to Smith.
Victor Joshua gave Saint Anselm a 36-35 lead with under a minute to play in the half with a layup, and took the one-point lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Owls hung around before Saint Anselm took control for a good portion of the half.
Mabrey gave Saint Anselm a 61-51 lead with 10:57 remaining with a three-pointer plus a free-throw for a four-point play.
Saint Anselm opened up the lead by as much as 16 with a 69-53 lead with 8:53 remaining when Santo finished on two free-throws.
The Owls however fought back and closed within single digits as the game wound down.
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) made it 76-70 with a three-pointer and 3:43 remaining.
SCSU then made it 80-78 with 36 seconds remaining after Smith's layup.
After trading freee-throws on both sides, Saint Anselm's Mabrey made one-of-two free-throws to give them an 83-80 lead and six seconds remaining.
The Owls got the rebound and Hamlet missed a three-pointer for the tie as time expired.
