Beathea's Double-Double Propels Owls Over Saint Anselm, 59-54

The Owls defeated Saint Anselm on Wednesday, 59-54, in a Northeast-10 Conference game.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds on her way to her eighth double-double of the year as she propelled the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team over Saint Anselm (4-12, 1-11 Northeast-10), 59-54, on Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 battle.

With 8:31 remaining in the second half, the Owls (5-10, 2-10 Northeast-10) would go on a 10-0 surge driven by Beathea who scored five points over the three minute span. The Owls would hold off a resilient Hawks team led by Curran Leighton's team-high 14 points.

The game was tied at 10 in the early going before Saint Anselm would rip off a 12-4 run to lead 22-14 with just over eight minutes to go in the first half. Southern would answer right back with a 10-0 spurt of its own energized by a pair of Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) three pointers and solid play off the bench by Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y.)



The Owls led by only one at the break, 28-27.

The Hawks led most of the first 12 minutes of the final half, but Southern would take command with that 10-0 run during a three minute time frame.

The Owls were only 9-19 from the foul line in the game, but hit them when it counted most. They finished 5-6 from the line in the last minute to seal the victory, 59-54.

Kate Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) had a career night for the Owls. The freshman would record a career-high 18 points in the win, including two clutch free throws in the last 30 seconds.





Fantini was also in double figures for the Owls, adding 12 points and seven assists in the win. Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) grabbed 11 rebounds and chipped in with six points, while Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) played solid at the point, dishing out five assists.

The Owls improve to 5-10 on the year and 2-10 in Northeast-10 Conference play. They will be on the road Saturday as they travel to No. 17 Stonehill at 1:30 for a Northeast-10 contest.
