Late 11-0 Spurt Leads Owls Past Stonehill, 77-74

EASTON, Mass. - Trailing by seven with almost four minutes remaining, an 11-0 run propelled the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 77-74 win over Stonehill in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Merkert Gynamsium in Easton, Mass.

The Owls (11-6, 8-5 NE-10) had three players in double-digits. Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) led the Owls with 19 points and four rebounds. Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) also had 18 points and four rebounds. Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 16 points, six rebounds and six blocks.

Stonehill (8-9, 4-9 NE-10) had four players in double-digits. Carter Smith led Stonehill with 14 points off the bench, while Pierce Cumpstone also had 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Brian Hamor also had 12 points.

In the first half, Stonehill opened up a big lead on the Owls on separate occasions, and looked to continue that momentum for the majority of the game.

Sam Markle gave Stonehill a 22-13 lead with a three-pointer and 12:20 remaining in the half.

After going down 27-18, SCSU however fought back and took a 28-27 lead. Murphy's three-pointer capped the 10-0 run, assisted to Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.).

Brian Hamor's two free-throws gave Stonehill a 45-39 lead that would carry into halftime.

In the second half, Stonehill quickly opened up a 50-39 lead with 16:53 remaining on Josh Heyliger's three-pointer.

Stonehill carried the lead late into the half and made it 66-57 when Heyliger made a layup with 6:38 remaining. Cole Jack then made it 68-61 on a layup with 4:05 remaining.

SCSU then went on the 11-0 run capped off by Langston's three-pointer to take a 70-68 lead with 2:08 remaining. The Owls would not lose the lead for the rest of the game.

Adam Fazzini got Stonehill within 72-71 after a three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining, but the Owls hit free-throws and got a key stop leading 74-71 to ice the game.
