Box Score

EASTON, Mass. – A pair of double-doubles by freshman Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) and junior Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) was not enough for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team as they were defeated by No. 17 Stonehill, 70-66, in a Northeast-10 contest on Saturday afternoon.

Southern trailed by as many as 13 with 8:29 remaining in the game at 58-45. The Owls would then rip off a 17-6 run over the next seven minutes to climb back into the game and cut the lead to two, 64-62.  The Owls would send Stonehill to the line a pair of times in the last minute and the Skyhawks would convert the free throws and go on to win by four.

Southern kept it close early in the game and led by four with 7:21 remaining in the first half. Stonehill would end the half on an 11-4 run to take a seven point lead into the break, 39-32.

The Skyhawks (15-2, 11-2 Northeast-10) would pad their lead in the second half led by Asia Ewing and Tori Faieta who each scored 18 points for Stonehill in the win.

The Owls would then claw back into the game on the back of Beathea and Smith-Ocran. The two combined for 22 points and 24 rebounds in the second half to lead the comeback. However, SCSU would fall short as time slipped away from Southern and they fell on the road in a Northeast-10 game.

Beathea finished with a game-high 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as she recorded her ninth double-double of the year. Smith-Ocran tallied her eighth double-double of the year for Southern, tying a career-high in rebounds with 18 and recorded 16 points, four assists and four steals in the loss.

Senior Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) also had an all-around solid performance with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Southern falls to 5-11 on the season and 2-11 in Northeast-10 play. The Owls will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to take on Southern New Hampshire at 5:30 p.m.
