ALBANY, N.Y. - Three players were in double-figures as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team opened 2013 by defeating Saint Rose, 66-60, in a Northeast-10 Conference game from Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium in Albany, N.Y.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls (7-4, 4-3 NE-10) with 17 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) had 16 points and six rebounds, and
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) also had 15 points and two rebounds.
Andre Pope led Saint Rose (7-4, 4-3 NE-10) with 16 points and three rebounds. Dominykas Milka had a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Tyler Sayre also had 13 points and five rebounds.
After Saint Rose jumped out to an early 13-4 lead, SCSU would chip away and take a 19-17 lead when
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) made a jumper.
The Owls would carry the lead into halftime, 29-28.
In the second half, Saint Rose would take a 39-37 lead, and Pope then made it 46-39 with a jumper with 11:17 remaining.
Murphy then helped lead the Owls back into the game with 13 second-half points. Murphy put the Owls ahead for good, 52-51, with a three-pointer, assisted to Langston, and 8:26 remaining.
Hamlet's three-point play gave SCSU a 60-51 lead with 5:57 remaining.
James Wilson brought Saint Rose within 60-57 after a layup with 2:57 remaining, but the Owls would not relinquish the lead.
Langston made it 62-57 with two minutes remaining, and would play defense to put the game away.
