Saint Rose Cruises In Second Half To Beat Southern, 81-62

The Owls fell to Saint Rose on Saturday, 81-62.

ALBANY, N.Y. – A huge second half for the College of Saint Rose proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated, 81-62, in a Northeast-10 Conference game.
 
The Owls (4-6, 1-6 Northeast-10) started the game hot, taking an early 22-9 lead, but Saint Rose (4-7, 1-6 Northeast-10) would fight back with a 13-0 run themselves to even the game at 22 a piece with 2:29 remaining in the first half.
 
Southern would take a 30-29 lead into the break.
 
The second half was a different story defensively for the Owls. Early in the half the Golden Knights would go on a 10-0 to take a double-digit lead, 42-32.
 
Southern would only cut the lead to single-digits once in the half and Saint Rose would lead by double-figures for most of the second half. The Chargers would lead by as many as 19 and go on to win by that total, 81-62.
 
The Chargers outscored the Owls 51-32 in the second half on their way to the win.
 
Freshman Jackie Beathea (Annadale, Va.) led Southern with 15 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md) finished with 14 points and Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and five steals to go along with eight points. Katie Stopera (Pearl River, N.H.) chipped in with nine points.
 
The Golden Knights had five players score in double-figures including a game-high 18 points from Jessica Walton.
 
The Owls fall to 4-6 overall and 1-6 in conference play. Southern will be back in action Wednesday at home when the face Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m.
