NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Down by 11 points with under 11 minutes to play, the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team completed a comeback to defeat No. 14 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce, 68-65, in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Moore Field House.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls (8-4, 5-3 NE-10) with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.) also had a career-high 17 points and three rebounds.
Tylon Smith (Manchester,Conn.) had 11 points and six rebounds.
Adrianos Vourliotakis Perdikaris and Ellis Cooper each had 19 points for Franklin Pierce (9-3, 6-2 NE-10).
In the first half, Smith gave the Owls a 24-18 lead with a layup and the Owls would take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Franklin Pierce controlled the first 10 minutes of the half.
Ant Lessane hit a jumper with with 10:34 remaining to take a 59-48 lead.
The Owls went on a 16-4 run to take the lead to help hold on for the win.
Hamlet trimmed the lead to 61-57 with 6:28 remaining with a layup plus a free throw.
Vereen gave the Owls a 64-63 lead with 3:20 remaining after a three-pointer.
After the Ravens jumped back in front, Vereen hit two free-throws to take the lead for good.
Franklin Pierce had a chance for the final shot, but Lessane missed a three-pointer as time ran out.
