Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Josh Gustafson (Lebanon, Conn.) scored in the 82nd minute of the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinal to propel the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team over Franklin Pierce 2-1.
The sophomore took a pass from
Sebastian Brems (Odense, Denmark)Â on the right side of the box and knocked the ball past Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Mike Konzel for the golden goal.
For the majority of the match, the Owls had their wings clipped by Franklin Pierce. The Ravens' defense was able to trap SCSU in its own end and controlled the play. At half, SCSU did not have a shot on goal.
Daquan King (Plainville, Conn.) opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. The sophomore beat Ravens' goalkeeper Mike Konzel to a loose ball at about the 18. All that was left for King to do was boot the ball into the vacated goal and the Owls had a 1-0 advantage.
All the shooting finally paid off for Franklin Pierce in the 69th minute. Owls' goalkeeper
Stephen Sasso (Orange, Conn.) was able to stop the first shot but conceded a juicy rebound right onto the foot of Jared Taber. The sophomore was able to strike the ball over a downed Sasso for the equalizer. The match-tying goal snapped the junior's shutout streak at 533:.24.
For the match, Sasso had 11 saves for the Owls, who were outshot 22-5 and gave up 10 corners.
SCSU (10-5-1, 10-3-1 NE-10) will play at Merrimack in the Northeast-10 Semifinals on Friday November 8.
