NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior captains,
Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and
Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio), of the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team powered the Owls' offense to a thrilling upset of AIC, 3-1 in Pelz Gymnasium earlier tonight. Both student athletes recorded double digits in both kills and digs. Black had 14 kills and 14 digs, while McVey notched a season best 18 kills to go alongside a team-high 19 digs and three blocks.
Freshman
Nicole Hauser (Stevens Port, Wis.) amassed an impressive 26 assists and 17 digs with six kills and three blocks coming within three assists of a career best night.
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.),
Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) and
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) wrecked havoc with AIC's offense as they combined for nine total blocks between them. Beres had seven kills, four blocks and three digs, while Gunneson had three kills, three digs and two blocks. Lathrop finished out the night with five kills and three blocks.
Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) assisted 24 points with four digs, while
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) added 17 digs with a service ace.
After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Owls came out with a fire keeping pace with AIC until 18-all. From that point, a combination of kills by Hauser, Beres and Gunneson allowed the Owls to gain the advantage and claim the set 25-21. The Owls retained the momentum in set three as they surged out to an 11-5 lead which shortly became a 19-9 lead and the set closure at 25-13. AIC managed to bounce back in the fourth set as they found themselves down two sets to one. The Owls were up 17-11 before AIC clawed back into the set on the back of a 9-3 run. A late set stumble set up the window of opportunity for the Owls as two kills by Black sealed the set 25-23 and match 3-1.
The Owls are now 16-10 overall and 4-6 in Northeast-10 conference play.
The Owls will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to Saint Michael's scheduled for 1 p.m.
