Balanced Attack Sends Men's Basketball To Season Opening Win

Lucas Van Nes and the Owls opened the 2013-14 season with a win tonight.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Five players scored in double figures, led by a double-double from junior captain Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.), as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a 93-75 win over Molloy on Saturday night.



Smith registered 22 points along with team-highs of 10 assists and eight rebounds. Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) each posted 17 for the Owls, while Stefon Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 10.



Molloy led for most of the opening seven minutes, but the game was tied at 18 with 11:28 remaining in the first half. The Owls then scored 13 of the next 19 points to build a seven point lead at 31-24. The Lions ran off the next five of the next seven points
before SCSU closed the frame on a 19-6 run that built the lead to 52-35 at intermission.

The Lions scored 10 of the first 11 points after halftime to trim the Owls' lead to just eight at 53-45. SCSU never led by fewer than seven the rest of the way and used a late run to put away the win.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow night at 8 p.m. when they will face Bridgeport.
