Greg Langston scored 27 points versus New Haven
Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The situation did not appear promising for the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team midway through the second half against Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven. The Owls, who trailed the majority of the game, were down by more than double-digits at home and had multiple players in foul trouble. Southern Connecticut came back to not only force overtime against the Chargers, a team that defeated them twice last season, but to win, 82-74, in overtime.

The victory was a complete team effort. Whether it was a pair of free throws by Lucas Van Nes (Hamden, Conn.) cut the margin to single digits with 10 minutes left or big baskets off the bench from Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) and Stefon Williams (Jamacia, N.Y) down the stretch; every Owl contributed to the victory.

Late in the tight game, the action on the court turned into an episode of the Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) show. Langston, who posted a double-double, 27 points and 15 rebounds, scored 16 points after the half.

The Owls went on a 19-13 run for the final nine minutes of the second half to force overtime deadlocked at 68.  Langston had nine points during the stretch, including Southern Connecticut's final four, while Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and Williams were able to crash the offensive boards for put backs.

Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) knocked down a three-pointer to open the extra session and the Owls led wire-to-wire thereafter. The sophomore forward totaled 21 points, while Mallory hit double figures with 10.

In the second half, SCSU was able to limit opportunities for New Haven's top scorers. Murphy was part of the contingent of Owls that held Eric Anderson, who entered the game second on UNH in scoring, to only nine points.  Justin Exum, the Chargers' leading scorer was shadowed by Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) to the tune of 10 points.

Smith was a rebound shy of a double-double, 10 points, nine rebounds.

The Chargers (7-3, 4-2 Northeast-10) were led by Jeffery Adkins 27 points.

Southern Connecticut (9-1, 5-1 NE-10) will play at the Dominican Tournament on January 3-4, 2014.
