Late Push From UNH Hands Owls Loss, 81-68

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Despite five Owls in double figures, a second half push from New Haven pushed it past the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team, 81-68.

The Owls are now 5-6, 1-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play. New Haven is now 8-3, 4-2 in NE-10 Conference play.

Bria Moore from New Haven led all scoring with 17 points.

Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the way for SCSU, having a double-double 15 points and 15 rebounds. Keshia Primo (Mississagua, Ontario) tallied 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) posted 11 points along with three rebounds. Freshmen Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) had a good all around night with 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) chipped in 10 points and two rebounds.



SCSU had an 11-3 run early on to set the tempo, the Chargers would get it back to within five before the Owls got the lead back up to 10 with 8:42 remaining in the first half. The 10 points deficit would be the largest of the half. New Haven came back with a small 5-2 run of their own to close out the half, going into the break trailing the Owls 42-39.



The second half got very aggressive. The Chargers began to take over with 10:14 left in the game, going on an 11-0 run to make the score 63-55. The Owls were unable to make a comeback, being down by as many as 16 points. New Haven would end up defeating the Owls by a final score of 81-68.



On the night, Southern was 43.5% from the field, 46.2% from behind the arc and 61.5% from the free throw line.



The Owls are back in action after the holiday break with they travel to Oakdale, N.Y. to take on Dowling. Tip-off for that match-up is set for 1 p.m.
