Beathea Turns In Double-Double In Loss To Saint Rose, 66-51

The Owls fell at home on Sunday to Saint Rose, 66-51.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds on her way to her 11th double-double of the year, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was defeated at home by Saint Rose, 66-51, in a Northeast-10 contest on Sunday afternoon.
 
Southern got off to a fast start in the first half with a 12-0 run capped off by a Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) three pointer followed by a Beathea layup with just four and a half minutes gone by.
 
Sparked by a Nicole Bini triple, the Golden Knights (9-12, 6-11 Northeast-10) would answer with a 13-0 run to take their first lead of the period. Bini would score 12 of her team-high 15 points in the first half, including three triples.
                                                 


After trailing by one, 27-26, with 3:39 to go, the Owls would then give up seven straight points, topped off by a buzzer beating jumper by Gabie Polce to give Saint Rose a 34-26 halftime lead.
 
Saint Rose would lead by as many as 10 early in the second half, but Southern would go on a 13-1 surge led by Beathea, who scored six points during the stretch, to take its first lead of the second half, 44-42.
 
With the Golden Knights lead at seven with 6:23 remaining in the game, Polce would drive to the lane and finish a layup plus the foul. She would convert the free throw and give Saint Rose a 10 point lead, which they would never give up and win by a final score of 66-51.
 
Polce would finish with 14 points and three assists for the Golden Knights as they swept the season series against Southern.
 
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) would finish with eight points for the Owls and Stopera and Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y.) would tally seven points in the loss.

 
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) would pull down a team-high 13 rebounds for the Owls.
 
Southern falls to 6-14 on the season and 3-14 in Northeast-10 play. The Owls will be back home on Tuesday to face Pace for a 5:30 p.m. start.
