SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team came into Wednesday night's Northeast-10 contest losers of three in a row and looked to stop that streak right there. The Owls would defeat LeMoyne, 72-57, on the back of senior Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.), who scored a season-high 19 points.
After the two teams were even at four apiece early in the first half, Southern ran off an 8-0 run and seemed reluctant to ever give up the lead. After LeMoyne cut the lead to five, SCSU tore open the game with a 12-4 run, led by freshman Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y) who bucketed six points during the stretch.
Southern would take a 10 point lead into the break, 30-20.
The Dolphins (5-19, 3-1) would start the second half strong, with a 6-0 run just a few minutes into the half, to cut the lead to four at 36-32. The Owls would respond a few minutes later with an 8-2 surge to secure a 10 point lead with 14:34 to go in the second half.
LeMoyne would threaten again later in the half and get within three of the Owls, but Southern would take a double-digit lead with 3:32 remaining and hold that lead the rest of the way. The Owls would end up winning by 15 with a final score of 72-57.
The Owls got valuable contributions from three of its freshmen, including 18 points and seven rebounds from Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.). Freshman Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) added 12 points and Lightbourne chipped in with nine.
Fantini would add nine rebounds to her team-high 19 points, one rebound short of tying a season-high.
Junior Moni Smith-Ocran was in double figures in rebounds grabbing a team-high 10 on the night, while scoring eight points in the win.
The Owls improve to 7-16 overall and 4-16 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Southern will hit the hardwood on Saturday to face New Haven at 1:30 p.m. from Moore Field House.
