NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Four players were in double figures, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team was defeated by New Haven, 73-70 in a Northeast-10 Conference game from Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.
The Owls lost their third straight game.
New Haven (18-7, 15-6 NE-10) had six players in double figures. Eric Anderson led with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jeffery Adkins also had 15 points.
SCSU (16-9, 13-9) was led by
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) also had 18 points and seven rebounds.
Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.) had 15 points and
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 12 points.
The Owls also honored their two seniors, Hamlet and Vereen, before the game.
In the first half, SCSU led 13-8 before New Haven went on a 7-0 run to make it 15-13. The run was capped off by a layup from Anderson with 9:37 remaining in the half.
The Owls took a 19-17 lead after Langston's jumper, but New Haven then went on an 8-2 run to take a 25-21 lead capped off a three-pointer from Adkins.
New Haven led at halftime, 29-28.
In the second half, the opening minutes were tight before New Haven began to open up the lead.
UNH went on a 9-0 run that started a three-pointer from Adkins to give them the 43-42 lead. It was then capped off by a jumper from Jeremy Williams to make it 49-42 with 5:20 remaining.
After Southern got within 51-46, New Haven then went on an 11-0 run that would give them the momentum that they needed. The run started with a three-pointer from Justin Exum to make it 54-46, and then was capped off with a three-point play from Ashanti DePass with a layup plus a free-throw to make 62-46 with 5:34 remaining.
The Owls were able to get within 65-57 after Hamlet's jumper with 1:37 remaining.
SCSU then got within 70-64 after a three-pointer from Hamlet with 35 seconds remaining. New Haven would make its free-throws to seal the road win.
