Owls Drop Conference Opener to Merrimack, 3-2

The Owls lost to Merrimack today, 3-2 in overtime.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sarah Coakley scored the winning goal during the second overtime period as the Merrimack College women's soccer team defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls are now 1-3, 0-1 in the NE-10 Conference. Merrimack is now 3-1, 1-0 in the NE-10 Conference.

Two goals from Steph Eaton and Alana Vecchiarello quickly put Merrimack ahead in the first period. In the 34th minute sophomore Caroline Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y.) put the Owls on the board. The period ended Merrimack leading the Owls 2-1.

A header from Junior Hannah Spreckley (York, England) assisted by a corner kick from Suzane Pires (San Pao, Brazil) in the 79th minute gave the Owls hope as they tied the game 2-2. The first overtime period was scoreless. With five minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Sarah Coakley got one right passed SCSU goalkeeper Rachael Hafer (Laurel Springs, N.J.) for the game winner.

The Owls will be back in action on Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. against Adelphi.
