MANCHESTER, N.H. – Running backs
John Moscatel (Lexington, Mass.) and
Dequane June (Bronx, N.Y.) combined for 259 yards on the ground and four touchdowns as part of a 512-yard effort as the Southern Connecticut State University football team captured a 42-20 win over St. Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday evening.
The Owls improved to 2-2, 2-1 in Northeast-10 play with the win, while St. Anselm is 0-4, 0-3 in league play.
Moscatel closed with 205 all-purpose yards (139 rushing, 16 receiving, 52 return), while June needed just 10 carries to amass 120 yards on the ground. Both rushing totals were career-highs for the pair. It marked the first time since Sept. 23, 2011 that the Owls had two backs over 100 yards in a game.
Quarterback
Jacob Jablonski (Gales Ferry, Conn.) completed 18-of-22 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
Gary Williams (West Haven, Conn.) had five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Vito Fornarelli (Colchester, Conn.) finished with four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown, along with 29 rushing yards on the night.
The defense was led by
Brian Wilcox (Jericho, Vt.), who had a team-high 12 tackles along with an interception.
Mustaqiim Plair (New Haven, Conn.) added six tackles, while
Mike Dunkley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) posted two interceptions.
Southern Connecticut opened the scoring with a nine play, 96-yard drive midway through the first quarter. Moscatel, accounted for 82 of the 96 yards (74 rushing) and capped the series with a nine-yard touchdown run.
Jeffrey Groth (Shelton, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
The Owls forced a three-and-out on the next Hawks' possession and then set up shop at the St. Anselm 24 after a fumbled snap on a punt attempt. From there, SCSU took six plays to find the end zone, culminated by a three-yard pass from Jablonski to Fornarelli. Groth's PAT made it 14-0.
Just 30 seconds into the second quarter, June capped an eight-play, 78-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Groth knocked the PAT through for a 21-0 lead.
St. Anselm cut the gap to 21-3 with a field goal on its next drive. However, the Owls put up the final points of the half when Jablonski found Williams on a 27-yard touchdown reception.
Devin Silverman (Berlin, Conn.) added a PAT to make it 28-3 at halftime.
The Hawks opened the second half scoring with another field goal to close it to 28-6. Southern Connecticut built its lead to 29 points when June broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run that padded the lead to 35-6.
Moscatel then added an 18-yard touchdown run that push the advantage to 42-6. St. Anselm would add two late touchdowns to make it a 42-20 final.
The Owls are back in action on Friday night for a home game against Pace.
