OAKDALE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team split a double header today on the Dowling College Campus in Oakdale, N.Y. The Owls dropped the first match against Dowling 3-0 but managed to bounce back in the afternoon match against Nyack College with a 3-1 victory.
During the match against Dowling,
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) brought the noise with 11 kills on 0.280-hitting.
Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) contributed nine kills and eight digs, while
Nicole Hauser (Stevens Port, Wis.) notched the first double-double of the year for the Owls with 16 assists and 12 digs with two block assists.
Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio) added 11 digs with five kills.
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) led all Owls with 15 digs.
Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) had 14 assists to go along with four digs.
Dowling took the match in straight sets 25-21, 25-17 and 27-25.
In the afternoon match, Southern Connecticut called upon every eligible Owl to participate in the effort. McVey tallied her first double-double of the year with a season high 14 kills off a 0.303-hitting percentage with 12 digs, while Black added also a season high of 13 kills to go alongside nine digs.
Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) recorded a scorching 0.364-percentage with six kills and four block assists. Hauser assisted a season high 29 points with seven digs and seven kills and three block assists. Carlson had 19 assists to go with two digs.
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) had four kills and two solo blocks, while
Madison Featherston (Lakewood, Colo.) added two service aces.
The Owls came out of the gate firing with a 0.324 team hitting percentage through the first set to catch the Warriors on their heels by a score of 25-15. Nyack bounced back in the second set to tie up the match 1-all. Despite the effort from Nyack, the Owls cruised through the final two sets 25-18 and 25-23 to take the match 3-1.
The Owls are currently 2-1 on the season.
The Owls will be back in action for their first home match of the year against Caldwell College on Tuesday Sept, 10th scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
