NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team held its own today, taking on the No. 1 nationally ranked Bentley Falcons, the score not reflecting the hard faught play, the Owls lost 83-66.
The Owls are now 6-8, 2-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Bentley is now 14-0, 9-0 in NE-10 Conference play.
Bentley's Lauren Battista led all scorers, posting 25 points on the day.
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led all Owls scoring, posing 16 points along with 2 rebounds.
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough,Conn.) tallied 14 points and 2 assists.
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) recorded yet another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) contributed nine points along with 2 assists.
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) chipped in eight points and five rebounds.
The Owls struck first with a jumper from Hankton. Then there was close to a four minute drought of no scoring from either squad. After an Owls timeout, they went on a 5-0 run, and continued to lead the Falcons until 7:47 left in the half when Bentley was able to tie it up at 19. There continued to be several ties and several lead changes, but at the break Bentley was ahead, 35-32.
Southern continued their hard faught play in the opening minutes of the second half, sticking with the No. 1 nationally ranked Falcons. It was only with about eight minutes remaining in the contest when Bentley began to pull away. The largest lead Bentley would have was 17 which was the same as the final score, 83-66.
Only going to the line seven times the whole game, the Owls shot an impressive 71% from the free throw line. The Owls were also 40% from the field and 31% from three-point range.
The Owls are back in action as they travel to take on Saint Anselm on Jan. 14, tip-off for that game is set for 5:30 p.m.
