Women's Basketball Gets Deeper Into NE-10 Play

The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball will play two Northeast-10 teams this week. First, they will travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm on Jan. 14., Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Next, they will play host to Saint Michael's on Jan. 18. Tip-off for that contest will be at 1:30 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.

ALL TIME VERSUS SAINT ANSELM
The Owls lead their all-time series against Saint Anselm 14-6.

ALL TIME VERSUS SAINT MICHAEL'S
SCSU has a 16-7 all-time record against Saint Michael's.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE RAMPAGE
Sophomore Jacke Beathea continued her double-double rampage with two more last week against Southern New Hampshire and Bentley. Beathea posted 17 points and 10 rebounds against Southern New Hampshire and 13 points and 11 rebounds against Bentley.

HANKTON STEPS UP AGAINST NO. 1
Mariah Hankton stepped up big against No. 1 nationally ranked Bentley on Saturday, recording 16 points to lead all Owls scoring.

EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE
The Owls continue to beat their opponents in second chance points. Against Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, SCSU posted 17 points off second chance opportunities as opposed to SNHU's two.

OWLS HELD THEIR OWN AGAINST NO. 1 BENTLEY
SCSU took on the best team in the country right now, the No. 1 nationally ranked Bentley Falcons on Jan. 11. The key to the Owls' almost success against Bentley was turnovers.The two squads ended up with the same amount of turnovers for the entire contest (16) but SCSU was able to capitalize, scoring 15 points off of Bentley's turnovers.

BEATHEA AMONG NCAA'S FINEST
Jackie Beathea has been named among NCAA leaders in double-doubles for five weeks in a row and will undoubtedly be back in the rankings this week as she posted a double-double against Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday and No.1 Bentley on Saturday.

SHE'S DONE IT AGAIN
Sophomore Jackie Beathea posted her sixth double-double of the season against Dowling, scoring 14 points along with 10 rebounds.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Freshman Maria Weselyj has had very consistent play as of late, scoring in double-digits for the fourth game in a row at Dowling with 14 points.

SHARP SHOOTING OWLS
The Owls as a team shot very well from three-point range against Dowling, shooting 54.5%, as well as from the line, 91.7%.

BENCH COMES THROUGH
The bench has continued to very helpful this season. In the Owls' game against Dowling, SCSU outscored the Golden Lions' bench 14-5.

HANKTON'S SEASON-HIGH
Mariah Hankton achieved her season-high in points as she tallied 17 points against Le Moyne.

LESTER MISSES BY ONE
Junior Sydni Lester missed a double-double by one rebound, against Post with 10 points and nine boards.

FOUR OWLS IN DOUBLE FIGURES
Keshia Primo posted 18 points, Jackie Beathea tallied 13 points, Mariah Hankton contributed 13 points and Taylor McLaughlin chipped in 10 in the 77-62 loss to Saint Rose. 

JUNIOR MAKES HER MARK
Junior guard Sydni Lester, made her mark in the Owls' win over Pace with a career-high 18 points.

BEATHEA ADDS ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE
In posting 13 points and 18 rebounds (career-high) in the Owls' win over Pace, sophomore forward Jackie Beathea recorded her fourth double-double of the season.

PRIMO GETS CAREER HIGH 19
Senior forward Keshia Primo had a career-high 19 points in the Owls' win over Post.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED
In their valiant effort to defeat their cross-town rival New Haven, the Owls did an impeccable job giving themselves second chance opportunities. SCSU had 20 second chance points against the Chargers.

THE OWLS CONVERT
In the win over Post, the Owls were able to score 35 points off of the 32 turnovers they forced.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS
Southern Connecticut's bench played a vital role in the 91-82 win over Post. The Owls outscored the Post bench  21-6.

CAREER-HIGH AFTER CAREER-HIGH
Senior Keshia Primo posted her career high in points again with 23 and Nicole Grossbard scored a career-high 14 as the Owls beat Post 91-82 on Dec. 18.

BEATHEA WITH FIFTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Sophomore Jackie Beathea posted her fifth double-double of the season in the loss to rival New Haven. Beathea was ranked No. 20 among NCAA leaders in double-double last week as well.

FIVE OWLS IN DOUBLE-FIGURES
In the loss to New Haven, there were five Owls in double-figures. Jackie Beathea posted 15 points, Keshia Primo tallied 13 points, Mariah Hankton and Maria Weselyj both contributed 11 points apiece and Sydni Lester chipped in 10 points.

JUST MISSED THE TRIPLE-DOUBLE
Sophomore Danielle Powell came up just short of a triple-double in the win over Concordia. Powell recorded 14 points, eight assists and nine rebounds.

SPARK OFF THE BENCH HAS CAREER NIGHT
Sophomore guard Nicole Grossbard acted as a spark off the bench for the Owls as she posted a career-high 12 points along with six assists in the Owls' win over Post.

THE SEASON OPENER
The Owls opened their 2013-14 season on the road on Nov. 9 as they traveled to Saint Thomas Aquinas. SCSU pulled out ahead of the Spartans early in the first half and never lost the lead until late in the second half. Taylor McLaughlin led all Southern scorers with 20 points. Maria Weselyj posted 13 points and Jackie Beathea chipped in nine points. The Owls ended up losing by a final score of 67-62.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome four newcomers to the squad for the 2013-14 season - Murphy Murad, Maria Weselyj, and Taylor McLaughlin and Sydni Lester.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns seven players from last year's squad - senior Keshia Primo, junior Mariah Hankton and sophomores Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jacqueline Deens.

DEENS HAS A DAY
Sophomore Jaqueline Deens had a career-best night in the win over Concordia. She contributed seven points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of play.

OWLS IN DOUBLE DIGITS
In the contest at home against Concordia, the Owls posted a season-high 97 points. Four Owls ended the game in double figures. Jackie Beathea recorded 20 points. Danielle Powell posted 14 points. Mariah Hankton chipped in 15 points, along with 12 points from Keshia Primo.

FRESHMEN CONTINUE TO STANDOUT
Freshmen Taylor McLaughlin and Maria Weselyj continue to thrive on the court for the Owls. Both starters, McLaughlin and Weselyj scored in double digits against Felician as SCSU won by a final score of 85-69. Weselyj led all scorers with 19 points and McLaughlin posted 18 points and nine rebounds. Weselyj was also named the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut Female Player of the Week this week.

BEATHEA STILL ON TOP
Sophomore Jackie Beathea has continued to be consistent this year. She has played in all 14 games and averages 14.1 points  and 10.2 rebounds per game.

IN THE POLLS
The Owls were ranked as high as No. 22 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll during the course of the 2012-13 season.

CLEANING THE GLASS
Two of the top five rebounders in the Northeast-10 Conference wore Owls' uniforms last year. Moni Smith-Ocran pulled down 10.8 rebounds per game, which was tops in the league. Jackie Beathea averaged 9.9 rebounds a game, which was good for fourth.

LOOKING BACK ON THE YEAR THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the 2012-13 campaign with a 7-18 overall record. The highlights from the year included a season-opening victory over Dowling, who eventually reached the NCAA Championship game

BEATHEA MAKES AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Jackie Beathea made her presence felt quickly during her freshman season with the Owls. She led the team in scoring (15.2 points per game) and was second with 9.9 rebounds a game. Beathea's 13 double-doubles were also a team-high.Beathea was named as both the ECAC Rookie of the Year and the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year, in addition to a selection to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team.

EXCELLENCE IN THE CLASSROOM
The Owls had seven student-athletes named to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year - Trinity Barnes, Jackie Deens, Nicole Grossbard, Liz McKinley, Danielle Powell, Keshia Primo and Moni Smith-Ocran.

MCLAUGHLIN NAMED NE-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman Taylor McLaughlin was named the Spalding Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference. McLaughlin tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in her first collegiate game and season opener against Saint Thomas Aquinas along with 18 points and nine rebounds in the Owls' win over Felician on Nov. 15.

CAPPING A FINE CAREER
Camille Fantini was the lone senior on the Southern Connecticut roster is 2012-13. A year after earning All-Conference laurels, Fantini finished the year with averages of 9.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game.

AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team had three players finish in the top 25 of NCAA Division II participants in three different categories.   
• Moni Smith-Ocran finished No. 13 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.8 per contest.
• Camille Fantini was among the leaders in steals per game at No. 21, averaging 3.04 per contest.
• Jackie Beathea ranked No. 20 in double-doubles, recording 13 on the season.
• The Owls as a team also finished No. 32 in steals per game with 11.5 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had four student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year.
