Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) tied his career-high with 26 points as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Saint Michael's, 88-85.  In addition to leading all scorers, the freshman grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals.

Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) totaled 22 points while Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) had 15 for the victors.

The home team opened the Northeast-10 Conference game strongly, leading 17-9 five and a half minutes in.

Midway through the first half, Saint Michael's went on a 11-6 run to cut the Owls' lead to three.  SCSU led 30-27 with 7:55 remaining in the first half.

From there, Southern Connecticut outscored the Purple Knights 22-11 to take a 14-point lead into the locker room.  Smith tallied 10 of his points during the stretch.

After the intermission, Saint Michael's quickly cut into the Owls' advantage.  Not five minutes into the second half, what was a double-digit lead evaporated into a five-point ballgame.

To the delight of the Moore Field House crowd, Southern Connecticut went on a 12-3 scoring run over the next three minutes.  Mallory recorded eight points as the Owls increased the lead back to 14.

The Purple Knights did not quit; with just over four minutes left in the game, the visitors trailed by a single point.

Thanks to Langston and Mallory knocking down crucial free throws at the line, Saint Michael's could not get over the hump.  Last minute attempts from three-point range by Mike Holton Jr. (17 points) and Corey Crawford II (11 points) rimmed out.

Four players scored in double-figures for Saint Michael's.  James Cambronne led the Purple Knights with 23 and Mike Thompson recorded a double-double, 18 points and 10 rebounds.

SCSU improves to 14-2, 8-2 Northeast-10 with the victory.  The Owls will host Stonehill on Wednesday Jan. 22 at 7:30p.m.
