Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) posting a double-double as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeats Saint Michael's 82-71.
The Owls are now 8-8 overall, 4-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Michael's is now 3-11 overall, 2-8 in the NE-10.
Hankton led all scorers with her 18 points.
Keshia Primo (Mississagua, Ontario) tallied 17 along with six rebounds. McLaughlin recorded 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) posted 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) and
Danielle Powell (Pine Bush, N.Y.) both chipped in eight points apiece.
The game started off slow, but picked up with a 9-2 run by Southern, leading 17-6 with 11:17 still to go in the half. The Owls led all of the first half by as many as 15. With 2:38 left in the first half, Saint Michael's started to cut the deficit down. A jumper from Kaitlin Geary, a three from Alexa Long and a couple of free-throws from Indira Evora put the Purple Knights right back in it, cutting the Owls' lead to six. The score going into the break was 40-34.
The Owls came out with fire in the second half, taking the lead back up to 14. The closest the Purple Knights could get was eight points with 6:14 remaining in the contest. Even though the Owls never really pulled away, Saint Michael's was never able to overcome the deficit. SCSU would win it by a final score of 82-71.
Southern was 37% from the field, 36.8% from three-point range and 72.4% from the line this afternoon.
The Owls are back in action when they host Stonehill on Jan. 22. Tip-off for that game is set for 5:30 p.m.
