Owls Step Up In Victory Over Stonehill, 79-77

Sydni Lester and the Owls defeated Stonehill tonight, 79-77.
Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Down three players due to injury, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team stepped up in its victory over Stonehill tonight, 79-77.

The Owls are now 9-8 overall, 5-6 in Northeast-10. Stonehill is now 10-5 overall, 7-4 in NE-10 Conference play.



Keshia Primo (Mississagua, Ontario) and Paige Marshall of Stonehill led in scoring with 19 apiece. 



Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) followed right behind with her 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Danielle Powell (Pine Bush, N.Y.) stepped up big for SCSU tonight, posting a season-high 15 points and six rebounds. Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) missed a double-double by one, tallying 14 points along with nine rebounds. Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) recorded nine points and seven assists. Jacqueline Deens (Ivoryton, Conn.) played some crucial minutes tonight off the bench as she chipped in six points and three rebounds.



Stonehill got out infront early with a 17-10 lead. A couple of jumpers by Powell, McLaughlin and a three from Grossbard tied the score back up at 19 with 9:42 left in the half. Amy Pelletier sunk a three of her own to put the Sky Hawks back up by one. Stonehill would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the 1st half. Going into the break Stonehill led by a score of 37-34.



With 13 minutes left in the game, McLaughlin put the Owls ahead by one. Southern went on a 13-3 run to make the score 61-52 with eight minutes left. The Owls would lead by as ten. Stonehill attempted to creep back in by scoring four three-pointers in the last minute and half. The Owls ran away with the win by a final score of 79-77.

SCSU was 2-2 from three-point range, 44.8% from the field and 77.3% from the stripe tonight.



The Owls are back on the court on Jan. 25 when they travel to Franklin Pierce. Tip-off for that contest will be at 1:30 p.m.
