Owls Lose to Dowling, 73-67

OAKDALE, N.Y. - A close game overall came down to the wire this afternoon as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team drops its third game in a row to Dowling, 73-67. 

The Owls are now 5-7 overall, 1-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Dowling is now 4-6 overall. 

Kristina Surian from Dowling led all scorers with 20 on the afternoon. 

Freshman Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) and sophomore Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the way for Southern with 14 points apiece. Beathea continues her double-double track, also posting 10 rebounds. Right behind them was Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) with 13 points along with four steals and three rebounds. Keshia Primo (Mississagua, Ontario) tallied eight points and four rebounds. Danielle Powell chipped in eight points and two rebounds. 

Though the Owls trailed all of the first half, they kept it close. Dowling's biggest lead in the half was five points. What kept the Owls close was their free-throw shooting, as they were 100%, 7-7 from the line. They were also 41.4% from the field in the first half. The Golden Lions went into the break with a four point lead, 32-28 over SCSU. 

The contest continued to be close in the second half, the score was tied four different times within the opening minutes. With 10:04 left, the Owls took the lead by going on a 7-2 run, making the score 51-47. But Dowling wouldn't back down, tying the score back up at 51 apiece. Despite being 71.4% from three in the second half, the Owls were unable to fight back.  A late three-pointer from Surian and a couple clutch free-throws from Dowling's Julia Koppl sealed the deal for the Golden Lions, winning by a final score of 73-67. 

The Owls did have a superb free-throw shooting day, posting a 91.7 percentage from the stripe. Southern rounded out the contest 40.3% from the field and 54.5% from three-points range. 

The Owls are back in action as they take on Southern New Hampshire at home on Jan. 8, tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
