Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Three players scored in double figures but it was not enough as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to visiting Southern New Hampshire, 99-90.

Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) led all scorers with 27 points.  The Owls' tri-captain also grabbed five rebounds.

Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) recorded his second double-double of the season, 19 points and 10 rebounds. The junior also had three assists and two steals.

SCSU received 16 points, six rebounds and four assists from Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.).

The visitors came out hot after the opening tip, knocking down five shots from three-point range to take a 23-13 advantage with 11:47 remaining in the half.  SCSU was able to respond to the opening salvo, going on a 13-2 run over a four minute span to tie the game at 28-28 with 7:27 left.

Austin Carter (Bloomfield, Conn.) keyed the run off the bench for Southern Connecticut.  The freshman had putbacks on the offensive glass, and blocked shots on the defensive end.  For the game, Carter totaled nine points and 10 rebounds.

The teams went back and forth from there, with the Penmen holding a one-point lead over their hosts, 44-43, at the intermission.

The Northeast-10 Conference squads continued to trade punches in the second half, as there were 10 lead changes and three deadlocks in the second half.

Late in the second period, the Penmen used a 12-1 run over two minutes and suddenly what had been a tie game did not look promising for the Owls.  Aleksandar Dobrovic and Chris Walters each had four points during the game-changing stretch.

Thanks to Southern New Hampshire hitting just enough of its free throws, over the final four minutes of the game, SCSU never trailed by less than five points.

The Penmen, who had four players in double figures, were paced by Mike Stys and Rodney Sanders, who went for 23 and 21 points respectively.

Southern New Hampshire drained 15 three-pointers in the NE-10 contest, with 80% of the team attempting shots from beyond the arc.  For the game, the visitors shot just shy of 54% from three-point land.

The Owls, now 11-2, 5-2 Northeast-10 Conference, play next on Saturday afternoon at Bentley.
