NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Another double-double from sophomore forward Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 75-62 conference win over Southern New Hampshire.
The Owls are now 6-7, 2-5 in Northeast Conference play. Southern New Hampshire is now 5-8 3-5 in NE-10 play.
Beathea led all scoring with 17 points along with 10 rebounds. Keshia Primo (Mississagua, Ontario) posted 13 points and 7 rebounds. Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) contributed nine points along with five rebounds and three steals. Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
The Owls came out shooting right away. Southern New Hampshire quickly switched to a zone defense and was able to shut them down from outside, SCSU was held to shooting 27.7% from the field in the first half. The score was close for most of the half but the Owls did pull away going into the break, leading at halftime 35-24.
The Owls came back out shooting in the second half and the Penmen got right back into their zone defense, only this time Southern New Hampshire was no match for Southern Connecticut's shooting. A three-pointer from Grossbard kick started the rhot shooting for the Owls. A 10-6 run in the closing minutes of the game really gave Southern Connecticut the opportunity to pull away, winning by a final score of 75-62.
SCSU had another positive performance from the free-throw line, shooting 73.9% on the night. The rounded out the game shooting 33.8% from the field and 35.3% from three.
The Owls are back in action when they travel to take on No. 1 nationally ranked Bentley on Jan. 11, tip-off for that game is set for
1:30 p.m.
