Daquan King (Plainville, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal in the 81st minute of a tie game to propel the No. 5 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory against the Stonehill Skyhawks Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Owls improve to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in league play. Stonehill drops to 5-4-1 and 3-3. Â
The scoring began in the 26th minute when
Kevin Joslyn (Norwalk, Conn.) headed in a cross from
Daniel Ruiz (Stamford, Conn.). The Owls added another goal in the second half when
Marby Velasquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the year in the 55th minute. Â
Four minutes later, James O'Shea scored on a shot from the top of the box to cut the lead in half. Connor O'Brien scored soon after to tie it after a misplay by goalkeeper
Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.).
The game remained tied until King scored his fourth goal of the year with nine minutes to go. Â
The game was physical throughout as 21 total fouls were called - six on the owls - and three yellow cards were given out, all to Stonehill.
SCSU returns home to play AIC next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
