Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A 27-yard field goal from Pace's Jan Strzelecki just 2:45 into the second half proved to be the margin of victory as the visiting Setters defeated the Southern Connecticut State University football team, 10-7, in the season finale for both teams today.
The Owls' season comes to a close at 2-9, while Pace moved to 1-10.
Senior
Gary Williams (West Haven, Conn.) hauled in a career-best 11 catches for 88 yards in the contest, one reception off the school's single-game record.
Julian Hayes (Middletown, Conn.) rushed for 99 yards on 23 carries.
Carlif Taylor (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Brian Wilcox (Jericho, Vt.) each totaled 10 tackles in their final games as Owls.
It was a game that the Setters won despite SCSU meriting only 150 yards of total offense.
After a scoreless first quarter, SCSU went in front 2:55 into the second frame.
Seth Sheridan (Ashburnham, Mass.) took the handoff and went in from three yards out to close an 11-play, 52-yard drive. Jeff Groth (Shelton, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
The Setters tied the game on the ensuing drive. Brian Beeker plunged in from three yards out before Strzelecki hit the extra point to tie it. The score remained 7-7 into halftime.
Strzelecki's field goal put the Setters ahead early in the third quarter. The Owls had a pair of field goal opportunities to tie the game, including one in the closing seconds, but were unable to convert.
