UDC Defeats Owls In Non-Conference Action, 76-67

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) scored a career-high 20 points, including six three-point field goals, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team lost a 76-67 decision to the University of District Columbia in non-league action today.

The Owls are now 1-4 overall while UDC improved to 5-1.

Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) posted her fourth double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) also chipped in her fourth double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Firebirds converted a layup right off the opening tip and then held an advantage for the first 13-plus minutes of action. The Owls went ahead briefly, but UDC closed the half with a late surge to carry a 37-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

UDC built its lead to eight points at 41-33 before the Owls went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to take a 43-41 lead. The game was tied at 45 and then at 49, but the Firebirds pulled away late for the win.

Chandler Williams (Chepachet, R.I.) scored nine points off the bench, while Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) finished with eight assists.

The Owls are back in action on Dec. 3 for a road game at Saint Rose.
