Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 15 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated the Franklin Pierce Ravens in the Northeast-10 Quarterfinals Tuesday night by a score of 5-0. With the victory, the Owls move on to the semifinals where they will face Adelphi this Friday.
Sophomore
Markus Jacobsen (Oslo, Norway) scored a hat trick for the Owls, tying himself with
Daquan King for the team lead in goals with eight.
Chae Brangman (St. George's, Bermuda) and
Ignacio Navarro (Norwalk, Conn.) scored the other two goals for Southern.
This victory comes just five days after Southern was beaten by Franklin Pierce 2-1 in Rindge, N.H.
The game started out in favor of the Ravens, who had a few opportunities to score in the opening minutes. Southern stood strong, though, preventing them from scoring and got themselves on the board when Brangman scored at 15:56. He headed in a cross from
Daquan King who was on the right side of the box near the end line.
That was all the Owls would need in the end, but they continued to apply pressure as the game got physical.
Both teams were given three yellow cards - the first five yellows were given out within fifteen minutes of each other. In addition, Bruno Fati of Franklin Pierce was given a red card in the 72
nd minute.
In the end, the Owls simply outplayed Franklin Pierce. They outshot the Ravens 15-9 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal. Jacobsen had great positioning for all of his goals, the ball having fallen to his right foot on the first two goals while standing in the middle of the box and scoring the third off a deflection.
