Women's Basketball Challenges Saint Rose and American International This Week

The Owls continue Northeast-10 action with two games this week.

NORTHEAST-10 ACTION RESUMES
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team continues Northeast-10 Conference action with two games this week against the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. and American International on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Moore Fieldhouse.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SAINT ROSE
Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series with the Golden Knights, 17-10.

LAST SEASON AGAINST SAINT ROSE
Southern Connecticut went 0-2 last season against the Golden Knights. In both meetings, Saint Rose defeated the Owls by the score of 77-62 and 75-67.

ALL-TIME VERSUS AIC
American International leads the all-time series with the Owls, 22-14.

LAST SEASON AGAINST AIC
Southern Connecticut went 0-2 last season with the Yellow Jackets. In both meetings, American International defeated SCSU by the scores of 89-65 and 70-67.

LAST TIME OUT
Southern Connecticut is coming off a 1-1 week in both conference and non-conference play. The Owls picked up their first win of the season with a 59-52 win over Pace, but fell to the Univ. of the District of Columbia, 76-67.

ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR THE BOOKS
Juniors Danielle Powell and Jackie Beathea recorded their fourth double-double for the Owls on Saturday. Powell recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds while Beathea tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds in the loss against the District of Columbia.

GROSSBARD HAS A DAY
In the win over Pace, Nicole Grossbard posted a career-high seven rebounds to go along with seven assists, a steal and four points.

A SPARK OFF THE BENCH
Maria Weselyj acted as a spark off the bench for the Owls as she posted a career-high 20 points along with two rebounds in the Owls' loss against the District of Columbia.

MCLAUGHLIN EARNS WEEKLY HONORS
Sophomore forward Taylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll this week after tallying 21 points (10.5 ppg), 10 rebounds (5.0 rpg), an assist, a block and two steals in the Owls' 1-1 week.

NE-10 HONOR ROLL
Juniors Danielle Powell and Jackie Beathea were named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll on Nov. 17 and Nov. 24.

BEATHEA STILL ON TOP
Jackie Beathea continues to lead the Owls in both points (14.0 ppg) and in rebounds (12.8 rpg).

GROSSBARD AND HANKTON LEADING THE WAY
Nicole Grossbard also continues to lead the team in assists with 34 while Mariah Hankton leads the Owls in steals with seven.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standoutTaylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
•    Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
•    Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
•    Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

ON DECK
The Owls return to action on December 8 as the team takes on Concordia (N.Y.) College in non-conference play.
