Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) had a stand out afternoon scoring 13 points along with junior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) posting her seventh double-double, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Le Moyne College 76-64 at Moore Fieldhouse.
Following the win, the Owls have won four-straight games and improve to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Le Moyne is now 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the NE-10.
Beathea led all scorers with 18 points while tallying 12 rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Hankton tallied 13 points along with two assists and a steal. Senior
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist. Junior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) led the Owls' offense with a team-high six assists in the win.
Southern Connecticut started the game off strong grabbing a 14-8 lead just seven minutes into the first half. Over the next couple of minutes, Le Moyne battled back to within three (18-15), but a layup from Beathea sparked an Owls' 7-0 run to bring the lead to double-digits (25-15). In the final three minutes of the half, Southern Connecticut stayed strong and took a 40-31 lead heading into halftime.
It was different story in the second half as Le Moyne came from behind and took their first lead of the game, 43-42, after a jumper from Alex Marple. With the clock winding down, both teams exchanged leads and tied the game for the the first time at 52-52. Hankton then led the Owls' with a 5-0 run putting them ahead 57-52 with 7:08 left to play.
With the momentum in favor of the hosts, Southern Connecticut continued to push its lead to double-digits following a huge three-pointer from
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.). From that point on, the Owls managed to keep their composure and double-digit lead to capture its fourth-straight victory, 76-64.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow as they take on Post University in a non-conference showdown in Waterbury, Conn. at 7 p.m.
