Box Score WATERBURY, Conn. - Thirteen different players scored for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team in its 100-77 victory over Post University on Sunday evening at the Drubner Center. With the win, the Owls' extend their winning streak to five games and improve to 6-4 on the season. Also, the last time the Owls scored 100 points came in 2008 in a 105-61 win over Post University at Moore Fieldhouse.
Junior
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) led the Owls' offense with 16 points and eight rebounds while sophomore
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. Senior guard
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) tallied 13 of the Owls' points as well as recorded an assist and a steal. Senior
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) registered 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Sophomore
Maria Weselyj (Marlborough, Conn.) rounded out the five double-digit scorers with 10 points, two steals, a rebound and an assist. Freshmen
Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md.) and
Abby Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.) also tallied their first career-points for Southern Conn. with two points each.
Southern Connecticut jumped out to an early 6-1 lead as Beathea sank a jumper to put the Owls up by five. Shortly after, Post battled back to within one (6-5), but a 12-6 run by the Owls' extended their lead to seven (18-11) with 12:42 left in the first half. About two minute later, Southern Connecticut found themselves ahead 27-16, but Post quickly brought the score to within four (27-23).
Over the next couple of minutes, Post kept the score to within reach until a layup from Lester started a 6-0 spurt for the Owls. In the final two minutes of the half, Southern Connecticut managed to find their rhythm and put its lead back up to double-digits, 46-36, heading into halftime.
Southern Conneticut kept its rhythm going into the second half outscoring the Eagles, 54-41. The Owls manage to keep their lead over Post above 20 points and shot a combined 60.5 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. In the end, Southern Connecticut shot a combined 51.3 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from long range and 73.7 percent from the line.
The Owls return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
