Women's Basketball Looks to Extend Winning Streak This Week

Owls prepare for three game this week, including a NE-10 showdown against cross-town rival the Univ. of New Haven on Saturday.

SOUTHERN CONN. PREPARES FOR THREE GAMES
Looking to continue its winning ways into the new year, the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team will play three games this week, including a Northeast-10 Conference battle between cross-town rival the Univ. of New Haven on Saturday, Jan. 3. Before taking on the Chargers, the Owls will challenge Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and will return home on Sunday, Jan. 4 to take on the Univ. of Sciences in a non-conference battle.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST ST.  THOMAS AQUINAS
Southern Conn. holds a 2-1 edge over the Spartans in the all-time series. Last year, Saint Thomas defeated the Owls' in their season opener, 67-62.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST NEW HAVEN
New Haven leads the all-time series against Southern Conn., 38-23. Last year, the Owls lost to the Chargers in game one, 81-68, but came back to defeat the Chargers, 71-66, in game two.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST UNIV. OF SCIENCES
Southern Conn. leads the all-time series against the Univ. of Sciences, 1-0. The last time both teams competed was back in 2005-06 in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

NORTHEAST-10 SOUTHWEST STANDINGS
As of 12/29, Southern Conn. remains at the No. 2 spot in the Southwest ranking's with a record of 4-1. Adelphi remains at the No. 1 spot while the Univ. of New Haven rounds out the top three with a 3-2 NE-10 Southwest record.

LAST TIME OUT
Before the holiday break, Southern Conn. defeated Georgian Court, 62-40, as well as earned its sixth straight win. Seven players score at least three points for the Owls' offense while Jackie Beathea recorded her eighth double-double, 18 points and 13 rebounds.

AMONG NCAA LEADERS
Nicole Grossbard and Jackie Beathea are currently ranked among the Div. II NCAA leaders. Grossbard ranks ninth averaging 6.2 assists per game while Beathea ranks second in offensive rebounds per game (6.0), third in double-doubles (8), and 14th in rebounds per game (11/8).

ITS ALL ABOUT REBOUNDING
As a team, the Owls are currently ranked among the top 50 nationally Div. II programs in three statistical categories. The Owls are No. 43 in rebound margin (+6.8), No. 21 in offensive rebounds per game (17.0) and No. 34 in defensive rebounds per game (30.0)

BEATHEA AMONG SCSU CAREER LEADERS
Jackie Beathea is now ranked 12th in the all-time career rebounding category with 579 rebounds and has tied the single-game high of 19 rebounds on 11/19/14 at Adelphi. She also has total of 829 career points and is 171 points away from scoring her 1,000 career point.

A BALANCED ATTACK
In the last six games, the Owls have managed to average 76.0 points per game while shooting 44.5 (174-of-391) percent from the field and 35.6 (26-of-73) percent from long range. Three players are averaging double-digits this season, while four others are scoring five points or more per game.

BENCH SUCCESS
Southern Connecticut has benefitted from increased scoring output from nearly its entire roster this season. The team has totaled 774 points this season while 241 of those points come from off the bench. 

POWELL NAMED CT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD/SCSU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Last week, Danielle Powell was named CT Army National Guard/SCSU Athlete of the Week after helping the Owls extend their winning streak to six consecutive games following the win over Georgian Court. She finished with seven points, a team-high 14 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal in the triumph.

CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea (five times), Taylor McLaughlin (three times), Danielle Powell (three times) and Mariah Hankton (twice) have all been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Honor Roll this season thus far. 

NEW ARRIVALS
The Owls welcome six newcomers to the squad for the 2014-15 season - Kendra Meredith, Chloe Brinton, Paige Decker, Abby Hurlbert, Liz McKinley and Chandler Williams.

WELCOME BACK
Southern Connecticut returns nine players from last year's squad – seniors Mariah Hankton and Sydney Lester, juniors Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Jackie Beathea and Jaqueline Deens, sophomores Maria Weselyj and Taylor McLaughlinand redshirt freshman Murphy Murad.

DESALVO NOTE
Bert DeSalvo is in his first full season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Entering the season, DeSalvo had compiled a 99-26 (.792) overall record as a head coach.

IN THE PRESEASON POLLS
Southern Connecticut was selected seventh in the Southwest Division according to the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior Mariah Hankton and junior Nicole Grossbard will serve as team captains for the Owls this winter.

LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON THAT WAS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the regular season with 12 wins and qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Owls had three student-athletes recognized by the league with year-end honors.

TWO NAMED TO NE-10 ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
Jackie Beathea was selected Third Team All-Conference and freshman standoutTaylor McLaughlin was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team.

AMONG THE NE-10 LEADERS
Amongst the returners, the Owls had two players finish in the top 10 of Northeast-10 Conference participants in three categories.
•    Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in rebounds per game, pulling down 10.1 per contest.
•    Jackie Beathea finished No. 1 in offensive rebounds per game, pulling 4.8 per contest.
•    Sydney Lester finished No. 5 in steals, tallying 2.1 per contest.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had nine student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.

The Owls return to action on January 7th as the team challenges Southern New Hampshire University in a NE-10 Conference showdown in Manchester, N.H.
