Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – Led by senior guard
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season Wednesday evening defeating Saint Rose, 78-75, in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Hankton led the Owls' offense with a team-high 26 points, three assists and three steals. Sophomore
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) chipped in with 15 points and two rebounds while junior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) recorded 14 points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Saint Rose took control early in the first half holding a 7-4 lead over the Owls. Following a layup from Grossbard, Southern Connecticut found themselves to within one (10-9) with 16:17 left to play in half.
Shortly after, Southern Connecticut went on a 4-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 15-12. Over the next three minutes, the Owls extended their lead to double-digits, 26-16, but the Golden Knights rallied back, 36-35. With the score tied at 37-all, Saint Rose took a 41-38 lead heading into halftime.
Just four second into the second half, Hankton brought the Owls to within one, 41-40, after a made jumper. Following Hankton's jumper, Southern Connecticut managed to go on a 9-6 run to take a 49-47 lead with 16:19 left in regulation.
However, Saint Rose answered back with an 8-3 run to take make the score 55-52. Following four ties, Southern Connecticut took a five-point lead (70-65) over the hosts with 3:26 remaining. Saint Rose continued to threaten the visitors' lead, but Southern Connecticut finished strong picking up its second win of the season.
Southern Connecticut returns to Moore Fieldhouse on Saturday, Dec. 6 as Northeast-10 Conference rival American International comes to town. Game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
