Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) scored a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday afternoon to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 73-66 victory over American International in Northeast-10 Conference play at Moore Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Owls improve to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference.
Beathea also picked up her fifth double-double of the season while junior
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) recorded a season-high 14 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Senior
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in with 13 points and a season-high eight assists.
Southern Connecticut came out strong grabbing an early 15-9 lead over American International. Shortly after, the Yellow Jackets tied the Owls, 15-15, after a jumper from Brianna Bishop with 11:45 left in the first half.
Over the next seven minutes, Southern Connecticut found themselves ahead by nine, 30-21, after a layup from Grossbard. With less than a minute to play in the first, American International continued to cut the Owls' lead, but SCSU held a 33-25 lead heading into halftime.
The Owls continued to push their offense and extended their lead to double-digits, 37-27. Not long after, the Yellow Jackets went on a 14-4 run to tie the Owls for the third time, 41-41. Southern Connecticut held together as a team taking another 10-point lead over American International, 55-45, with 7:31 remaining.
With less than four minutes to play, American International cut the Owls' lead to three, 57-54, but a 6-0 run by the Owls extended their lead to nine, 63-54. American International hung in tough in the final minute, but Southern Connecticut picked up its third Northeast-10 Conference win of the season.
Southern Connecticut returns to the court on Monday, Dec. 8 as the Owls take on Concordia (N.Y.) in Bronxville, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
