Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.), as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Concordia (N.Y.) Monday evening in non-conference action, 67-61, at Meyer Athletic Center.
Beathea tallied her sixth double-double of the season with a team-high 15 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three assists and a block. Sophomore
Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) chipped in 12 points, three rebounds and two assists while senior
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) tallied 11 points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Junior
Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) rounded out the quartet with 10 points, six blocks and seven rebounds.
In the opening five minutes, Southern Connecticut took a 9-7 lead over Concordia (N.Y.). Over the next nine minutes of play, both the Owls and the Clippers battled for the lead going through five ties and five lead changes.
With just under a minute remaining in the first, Southern Connecticut found themselves ahead by four, 32-28, but Concordia threaten the lead to within two (32-30). Just 17 seconds later,
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) put the Owls' lead back to four, 34-30, heading into halftime.
Southern Connecticut started the second half strong and managing a 16-7 run to extend its lead nine, 50-37, with 13:12 remaining on the clock. Southern Connecticut stayed strong and kept their lead over the Clippers to double-digits until Hadiyah Black brought Concordia (N.Y.) to within single digits, 58-50.
It wasn't long after Southern Connecticut built back up its double-digit lead, taking a 62-52 lead with 4:11 left to play. Concordia continued to threaten the Owls bringing the score to within five, 64-59, with 48.6 seconds left. The Owls kept the hosts from sending the game into overtime and the Owls picked up their fourth win of the season, 67-61.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday, December 12 as they welcome Le Moyne College to Moore Fieldhouse for a 12 p.m. Northeast-10 showdown.
