Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Three players scored more than 20 points as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team, ranked No. 19 in the nation by the NABC, defeated Assumption, 91-71.

Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) led all scorers with 26 points.  The Owls' tri-captain, who went 10-of-16 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.

Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) finished a rebound shy of a double-double, corralling nine rebounds to go along with 23 points.

Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) came off the bench to score 15 of his 20 points in the second half.

The visitors played SCSU tough in the first half, leading by a few points for large portions of the opening period.  The teams entered the locker room tied at 40.

Midway through the second half the Owls took over the Northeast-10 Conference matchup, going on a 19-4 run.  In those four minutes Southern Connecticut turned what was a four-point lead into a 19-point advantage.

The run was keyed by three-pointers from Mallory and Murphy coupled with excellent play on both ends of the court by Austin Carter (Bloomfield, Conn.).  The Owls' freshman blocked shots and cleaned the glass shortly after he threw down an emphatic two-hand jam.

The Greyhounds never trailed by less than 14 points after that stretch.

Marcus Murray led Assumption with 20 points.

SCSU (18-2, 12-2 NE-10) plays next on Wednesday at New Haven.
