Fast Pace Finish Pushes Owls By Assumption, 59-50

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A slow beginning and a fast pace finish handed the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team its second win in a row, defeating Assumption, 59-50. 

The Owls are now 11-9 overall, 7-7 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption is now 11-7 overall,  7-6 in NE-10 play. 

Freshmen forward Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) led all scoring with 19 points and 10 rebounds. 



Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) posted yet another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Keshia Primo (MIssissagua, Ontario) recorded nine points and five rebounds. Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) chipped in with four points and five rebounds. 



The Owls got out to a quick 8-0 lead but Assumption followed that up with an 8-0 run of their own, tying it back up at eight. After that play was slow and the score remained the entire half. The deficit was never more than a few points. Southern was 0-5 from three-point range and 24.4% from the field in the first half. SCSU went into the break leading 34-33. 



The Owls' poor three-point shooting continued in the second half, going 0-2, 0-7 on the afternoon. Play continued to be slow but picked up with about two minutes remaining. Both squads finally looked like they had a sense of urgency. Southern got a little help from Lester when she score two crucial buckets at the end of the contest that would seal the deal. 



SCSU ended the afternoon 33.8% from the field and 65% from the free-throw line. 

The Owls are back in action when the travel cross-town to take on their rival New Haven on Feb. 5. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
