Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.),
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) and
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored the final 14 points as the No. 9 Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team escaped St. Rose with its 12th straight win, 86-80.
Houston had eight straight points for SCSU late in the Northeast-10 Conference matchup, including a three-pointer to tie the game at 80. The junior followed up with a layup for put the visitors ahead for good. Houston, one of five players to score in double figures, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Langston led the Owls with 20 points. The senior also grabbed five rebounds and had four steals.
Smith totaled 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the NE-10 contest.
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) added 14 while
Stefon Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) had 11.
Early in the second half, the Owls' shooters took off. SCSU scored 33 points in the opening 10 minutes of the second period to turn what was a 48-37 halftime deficit into a six point lead (70-64).
The home Golden Knights crept their way back into the Northeast-10 Conference game, going on a 13-2 run over the ensuing five minutes to go back in front, 77-72, with just over four minutes left. The Owls could only manage a
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) layup during the stretch.
Southern Connecticut, 23-2, 17-2 Northeast-10, hosts AIC in the regular season finale on Tuesday night.
