WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 16 Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team escaped Charger Gymnasium with its win streak intact, defeating New Haven 78-72.
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) led the Owls with 21 points. The senior guard grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) came off the bench to score 20 points.
The tightly contested opening period featured seven ties and five lead changes. At the half, the Chargers led 35-31.
After the intermission, SCSU outscored New Haven 47-37; with Mallory (17) and Langston (14) combining for 31 points in the second half.
A three-pointer by the freshman gave the Owls a 56-55 lead with 10:10 left in the game. The guests never reliquished the advantage thereafter.
The team's eighth-straight victory was sealed with a dunk by
Stefon Williams (Jamacia, N.Y.) with nine seconds left. The sophomore scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) finished with 12 points and a team-high five assists.
For the game, there were 12 ties and eight lead changes.
Four Chargers scored in double figures in the contest.
SCSU, 19-2, 13-2 Northeast-10 Conference, hosts Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon.
