Taylor McLaughlin (Colchester, Conn.) continues her hot streak tonight against cross-town rival New Haven, as the Southern Connecticut State Univervisity women's basketball team defeats the Chargers 71-66.
The Owls are now 12-9 overall, 8-7 in Northeast-10 Conference play. New Haven is now 14-7 overall, 9-6 in NE-10 play.
McLaughlin led all scorers with 22 along with three rebounds.
Sydni Lester (Teaneck, N.J.) posted 15 points and four rebounds.
Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) tallied 14 points and six rebounds.
Danielle Powell (Pine Bush, N.Y.) also with a big night posting a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds.
The Owls fell behind right away but tied the score up at 15 with 10:50 left to go in the first half. A couple of free-throws from Grossbard gave Southern its first lead of the contest, 17-15. The Chargers went on an 11-2 run to take a signifigant lead, 31-23 with 2:26 left in the half. The score going into halftime was 34-29.
McLaughlin scored 12 of her 22 in the second half. SCSU tied the score up at 43, with 15 minutes remaining. With 6:33 left in the game, the Chargers had their last biggest lead of the game, 66-60. 11 straight points to end the game put the Owls on top, claiming their victory by a score of 71-66.
Despite their 0-2 night from three-point range and their 38.7% shoot percentage, the last six and half minutes won the game for Southern.
The Owls are back in action when they host Le Moyne on Feb. 8. Tip-off for that contest is set for 1:30 p.m.
