No. 2/4 Owls Score 60 Second-Half Points to Defeat Bridgeport, 89-73

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Trailing by a half dozen at the intermission, the top-seeded and No. 2/4 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team erupted for a 25-1 run after the break en route to a 89-73 victory over the No. 8 seeded University of Bridgeport on Saturday evening in a NCAA Tournament first round game at Moore Field House.


Junior Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and senior Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) both had 26 points for the Owls.


Smith added seven assists, while Langston had seven rebounds.


Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) added 11 points, six rebounds and three steals for Southern Connecticut, which tallied 60 second half points.

The Purple Knights held the lead for the majority of the first half and carried at 35-29 lead into the break. UB limited the Owls to just 29-percent shooting in the first half, including 18-percent from three-point range.

The second half was a different story. SCSU shot 55-percent from the field (17-of-31) and was 6-of-12 from three-point range.


Southern Connecticut, winners of a school-record 17 straight games, matched the school single-season record for wins with the triumph.

JoJo Swift (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Purple Knights with 23 points in the contest.



With the victory, SCSU (28-2) advances to play No. 4 Franklin Pierce tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Bridgeport's season comes to a close at 18-11.

In the opening game of the regional, No. 3 Saint Anselm defeated No. 6 Le Moyne 73-62.

The second game of the afternoon saw No. 7 Bloomfield stun No. 2 New Haven, 59-57.

The day's games ended with No. 4 Franklin Pierce edging No. 5 Phiadelphia, 66-65.
