NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 2/4 Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team defeated Saint Anselm, 78-72, to advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in school history on Tuesday evening,
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) led the Owls to their school-record 19th straight victory. The Southern Connecticut point guard recorded a double-double, 29 points and 10 rebounds. The East Regional Most Outstanding Player, who went 11-of-13 at the line, also dished out four assists.
Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) and
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.) added 15 points each. Langston, a member of the All-East Regional team, grabbed seven rebounds.Â
Southern Connecticut, which trailed 32-25 at the half, turned it around in the second half to take control before sealing the win at the line. SCSU went on a 22-4 run midway through the second half to turn a eight-point deficit into a 10-point lead.
Saint Anselm had four players score in double figures, led by Chris Santo and Roy Mabrey with 16 each.
The Owls, 30-2, will play in the Elite Eight (March 26-29) in Evansville, Ind. SCSU will face Central Missouri on March 26.
