Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team was swept by Concordia (N.Y.), 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15), in Monday night's non-conference showdown at Pelz Gymnasium. With the win Concordia (N.Y.) improves to 1-2 on the season, while the Owls drop to 1-6 on the year.
For the Owls, freshman
Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.) had a team-high 12 digs and eight kills, while freshman
Alexandra Nimz (Littleton, Colo.) dished out 19 of the Owls' 24 assists.
The Owls opened the first set on a 5-2 run, but the Clippers rallied back on a 7-0 run to force the hosts to take a timeout. Down by seven, SCSU rattled off three-straight points to bring the score to within four (23-19). However, Concordia ended the set on a 2-0 run to seal the frame, 25-19.
With the Clippers up 1-0 heading into the second set, the Owls battled right back. However, after a run by Concordia, the hosts found themselves trailing the Clippers, 11-9. Following a kill from
Sean Taylor (Kent, Wash.), SCSU found themselves within two (20-18), but Concordia took the set, 25-19.
Following eight ties early in the third frame, the Clippers pulled ahead taking a 19-13 lead, forcing the Owls to take a timeout. SCSU rallied off two points, but Concordia secured the final set and match, 25-15.
The Owls are back in action on Friday, Sep. 19 when the team hosts non-conference foe Holy Family at Pelz Gymansium. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
